8x20 Camera Build Part One

3D Visualisation: 8x20 Camera

Work has now started on the 8x20 camera after completing the initial prototype testing on the 8x10 camera. The over all design of the 8x20 camera is similar to the 8x10 camera but there have been some important modifications that will work their way back into the 8x10 camera. The chassis of the camera has had it's rack and spurn gear mechanism uprated to a 6mm shaft from 4mm due to the increased stress of supporting and moving larger camera back standard. The front carriage has been simplified and also modified so there is less friction with the base when using the focusing movement, the design is now similar to the rear carriage. I have started making the chassis and a more detail technical insight into the design and making will be posted later with photographs of a hopefully functional design.

The rear standard of the camera is a stripped down minimal design, after playing around with the 8x10 prototype camera I have decided the film holder just needed a couple of retaining points which would reduce the weight of the rear standard and also lessen the surface tension loading and uploading the ground glass and film dark slides.

The build of this camera is very straight forward, where things will get interesting is building the film dark slides which from experience building them for the 20x24 camera will be slow, taxing and demanding job in obtaining the precision required. In the meantime I will leave you with these visualisations of the 8x20 camera with more detail postings to follow.
