Camera Shoot Out - Part 1 Black and White

Last year we decided to do a series of tests using traditional large format film and digital cameras to see if the latest technology could challenge a 4x5 or 10x8 negative. We used a Wista 4x5 (complete with Schneider 150/5.6 Apo Symmar) and a Toyo 10x8 field camera (complete with Schneider 300/5.6 Apo Symmar) for film. A Canon 5D II (complete with 24-70mm f2.8 L USM) and a Hasselblad H3DII-39 (complete with HC 2.8/80) cameras for digital output. The 4x5 film was scanned using a Flextight X5 scanner, the 10x8 film was scanned using an Epson 4990 scanner, the Canon 5D has a full frame sensor equivalent to 35mm and the Hasselblad has a 39 million pixel sensor equivalent to medium format film. Both the 4x5 and 10x8  film was shot on Delta 100 and processed in ID11. None of the images have been adjusted, the digital cameras were set to 100 iso to match the film stock and all cameras had similar shutter and aperture settings. We hope to return with the ultra large format 20x24 camera so we can add the image to the tests.

We will leave you to draw your own conclusions

Over the next month we will continue to post the tests and experiments we have done over the past year.
